Open Championship 2012 – British Open History – 5 Time Champion Tom Watson
By Marco Stassi

American Tom Watson dominated the Open championship from 1975 through 1983. His likable personality and competitive nature endeared him to British golf fans. Tom Watson was a very popular champion.

Tom Watson surprised many with his victory in his first British Open championship. But this should not have been that astonishing given that Watson’s game was well suited for the shot making needed on the links style courses that are part of the British Open rotation. His strengths at putting and scrambling served him well on these demanding courses.

To notch his first Open Championship in 1975 at Carnoustie, Watson had to sink a 20 foot putt on the 72nd hole to tie Australian Jack Newton to force a playoff. He then won the 18 hole playoff by 1 stroke.

Watson won again at Turnberry in 1977. He defeated Jack Nicklaus in an epic duel that many in the golf world consider to be one of the most memorable of all major championships. The two so dominated the tournament that the third place finisher, Hubert Green, ended 11 shots back of Watson and 10 behind Nicklaus.

Tom Watson won his third British Open at Muirfield in 1980. He finished far ahead of the field, four shots better than Lee Trevino. His winning score of 271 was at that time the second-lowest winning total.

During the 1982 Open at Royal Troon Watson trailed the leader, Bobby Clampett, by seven after two rounds. Unlike in 1980, when he won going away, Watson benefited from the collapse of both Bobby Clampett and Nick Price. His steady play allowed Tom to win by 1 shot.

In 1983 at Royal Birkdale, Watson arrived at the 18th tee leading by a single shot over Andy Bean and Hale Irwin. Needing to make par on the final hole to win a major championship puts a golfer under extreme pressure. Watson responded by ripping his drive 265 yards straight down the middle of the fairway. From 213 yards away Watson hit as he described “the best two iron of my life”. The ball finished 15 feet from the pin, and Watson two putted for victory.

Watson’s fifth British Open win in nine years clearly established him as one of golf’s great champions. Watson would later win 3 Senior British Open titles, further endearing him to British golf fans.

Throughout its 138 years the Open Championship has produced many memorable moments. To learn more about British Open courses, past champions and other highlights, please visit Open Championship 2012

Open Championship 2012: The Top 3 Recent Stories From the US Open Championship

By Benjamin Robert Ehinger

When you start to talk about the US Open Championship for golf it is important to know some of the history, but it is also important to understand some of the more recent things that have happened at this tournament. This is one of the 4 major tournaments on the PGA Tour and it is vitally important in the golf world.

If you do not understand much about golf, then you do not understand the significance of the US Open Championship. However, if you are a golfer or you like to watch golf, then you know that this is an event that you simply do not want to miss. The following 3 stories will give you good reasons to watch the tournament this year.

The Top 3 Stories from the US Open Championship from Recent Years

1. The Tiger vs. Rocco Story

If you saw Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate go at it a few years ago when Tiger hurt his knee, then you remember where Rocco made a name for himself. This was a year that the US Open Championship went to a Monday playoff round and Tiger ended up winning as he limped through to the end. Even a runner up finish for Rocco was enough to give him a great name in the golf world.

2. The Lucas Glover and Ricky Barnes Story

More recently Lucas Glover won the tournament and was able to make his first mark on the golf world. The same year a man wearing a painter’s cap named Ricky Barnes came out of nowhere to lead after a couple of rounds and finish very strong. This was the first time that many golf fans ever heard either of these names and now they are consistently playing well in golf tournaments.

3. The John Daly Story

Who can forget about John Daly? He qualified for the US Open Championship just like Rocco did by going through the local qualifying and working his way to the actual tournament. This is how he got his start way back when and this is how he put his name on the golfing world.

What are your Options for Viewing the US Open Championship This Year?

You basically have two maybe three options if you want to see the US Open Championship. You can get yourself tickets and watch it live, but this all depends on where you live and how soon you get your tickets. They do sell out every single year and tickets for the US Open Championship go very fast.

You can also watch it on television because it is nationally televised. They will not show everything, but they will cover most of the tournament. Another option is to watch it on a smart phone or on your computer at work if you have to. This is not a tournament to miss a moment of and if you want to see every moment you may need to take advantage of this option.

Basically you want to see the entire tournament from Thursday all the way through Sunday. Who knows, you may get a fifth day this year with another Monday playoff or it could end on a long putt? You never know what you are going to get when all the best golfers in the world get together at the US Open Championship.

Open championship 2012 – Battle for the Claret Jug

As we know that this tournament is oldest major golf tournament in the world. And it is only major golf tournament which is organised outside United States.

This tournament is, hence very prestigious and it is expertly administered by Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, well known as R&A.

This championship is organised at nine classic venues in Scotland and England, alternately every year. In 2011, the Open Championship was arranged in Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Kent . Everybody is very excited, because in 2012 the venue is Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire.

It is a good chance for the prestigious golf club to successfully organize the championship and club’s vast natural beauty can be presented to the world. And for the people from Lancashire, it is a new reason to cheer because they are going to watch the champion golfers play in front of them. It will very exciting and breathtaking for the fans but very difficult competition for the players to achieve the prestigious Claret Jug.

It will provide good platform for investment. And definately, the tourism in the Lancashire will be boosted and provide various employment opportunities. The Open Championship event will be held from 15 July to 22 July 2012. The week will be a good chance for the young players to prove themselves in international golf but the the senior players will be the real excitement to watch.

Last year’s champion, Darren Clarke will be one of the favourites and will be starting at the top of the Open Championship leaderboard . Phil Mickelson from USA, Dustin Johnson from USA, Thomas Bjorn from Denmark, etc are other players who will battle for the Claret Jug. Darren Clarke will be aiming for his second consecutive win and huge prize money.

So keep your fingers crossed, and watch the players creating new records in the history of the game.

The Worst Shots in Golf

By Martin Vousden

Even the best in the world get it spectacularly wrong on occasion, so we take a slightly malicious delight in reminding you of the days when things went pear-shaped

Seve Ballesteros, 1986 Masters, Augusta National, 15th hole

Everyone remembers Augusta in ’86 for the stirring Jack Nicklaus final round that brought him his sixth green jacket and 18th and last Major, but it should never have been.

As Nicklaus stood over a putt on 16 – that he missed – Ballesteros was standing in the 15th fairway, waiting for Jack to finish and the fuss to die down. Having eagled the 13th he had hit a superb drive on the last par five on the course and now stood with a two-stroke lead, and a 4-iron in his hands ready to negotiate the remaining 210 yards for a certain birdie, possible eagle. He knew the only way he could mess up was to hit it short in the water but that was his ultimate undoing because, subconsciously, he also knew he had too much club. The swing was short and lacked conviction and the ball went unerringly into the pond. Bogey six, followed by a three-putt bogey on 17.

Game over.

‘That’ll be a 44 large,’ said Jack.

Phil Mickelson, 2002 Ryder Cup, The Belfry, 6th hole

The world number two golfer was drawn to play against unknown Phillip Price in the singles of the 34th Ryder Cup and by the sixth hole was just getting into his stride. A fine drive, followed by a searing iron to three feet set up the easiest of birdie chances for Mickelson – especially as his opponent was in real trouble, having to stand half in a water hazard with the ball well above his feet. He then produced a great shot and put the ball to within six feet himself. When he holed the putt for the most unlikely of birdies, Mickelson was rattled and allowed it to show. He not only missed but his putt never touched the sides.

‘Tell ‘em who I beat,’ said Phillip.

Sandy Lyle, 1985 Open, Royal St George’s, 18th hole

Unusually in this selection, the man concerned still went on to win – but it was a close run thing. Having started the final day of the ’85 Open three shots adrift, Britain’s favourite golfing son gradually hauled himself back into contention and it looked as if a par up the 18th would be good enough for victory. But then Lyle’s approach found Duncan’s Hollow, a dangerous dip in the ground to the left of the green – and the flagstick was perched just over a small rise. To get it close would need a delicate touch and at his first attempt Sandy had the touch of a donkey wearing boxing gloves. The ball came right back to his feet. But unknown to him at the time, immediately behind on the 17th, Bernhard Langer and David Graham were also making bogey, so Sandy’s second chip and a putt were good enough. Just.

‘Stone me,’ said Sandy. ‘Screw you,’ said Langer and Graham.

Curtis Strange, 1985 Masters, Augusta National, 13th and 15th holes

While everyone else gets one mention, Curtis gets two, in the same round, on the same day, within three holes. Having shot 80 on the first day he roared back with rounds of 65 and 68. Then on the front nine on Sunday he went to the turn in a four under par 32 and grabbed the lead as statisticians looked at each other and agreed that yes, this would be the best ever comeback in Masters history. The man had played 45 holes in 15-under par and was virtually through Amen Corner unscathed. And then he took his 4-wood and chunked it in the water. And then he did it again at 15 and came home in four over. Thankfully, he recovered well enough to win consecutive US Opens in ’88/9.

‘This’ll ruin you or make you a better player,’ Jack Nicklaus said.

Ian Baker-Finch, 1984 Open, St Andrews Old Course, 1st hole

Like many comparative unknowns before him, Ian Baker-Finch was largely ignored after a first round 68 in the Open Championship but the good-looking Australian with the smooth swing refused to go away. When he followed it up with a 66 to take a three-stroke lead, and then consolidated with a 71 on day three, the whole world took notice. So he started the final round of the most important day of his golfing life, leading the Open, alongside five-times champion Tom Watson. Was he nervous – nah, his opening drive split the fairway, leaving a short iron to the first green. He hit it smoothly and watched it settle on the putting surface, before the ball sucked back into the Swilken Burn, taking Baker-Finch’s hopes with it. He limped around in 79 and finished tied ninth.

‘Bloody burn,’ he said.

Tom Watson, 1984 Open, St Andrews Old Course, 17th hole

Watson had, the year before, taken his fifth Open Championship but he now desperately wanted a sixth to tie Harry Vardon’s all-time record – and do one thing at least that Jack Nicklaus hadn’t done. He started the final day in a tie for the lead with Ian Baker-Finch and by the time he reached the 17th tee he was still sharing top spot – only this time with Seve Ballesteros, who was in the group ahead. Seve made his first par on the hole all week but Watson, from the middle of the fairway, hit far too much club – a 2-iron that finished up against the wall, across the road for which the hole is named. He still insists to this day that 2-iron was the right club. We still insist he’s wrong.

‘I am the champion.’ Seve Ballesteros

Golf’s Greatest Moments

By Jason James Ferris

The sport of golf has given us many unforgettable moments as well as the golfers who authored them. Steeped in history and tradition, the sport has built its foundation on the accomplishments of its heroes, past and present. Much like the other sports that thrive in collective consciousness, golf has had its share of defining moments for both the sport itself and those who cherish it. Here are some of the most memorable moments in the history of golf.

Here comes Arnie

On Sunday of the 1960 U.S. Open, Arnold Palmer found himself seven shots off the lead heading into the final round. After a reported commented to Palmer that he was too far back to be considered a contender, Palmer stepped up to his first tee shot and drove the green on the par-4 346-yard first hole. Palmer birdied six of the first seven holes and went on to post an incredible 65, good for a 2-shot victory of Jack Nicklaus.

Dawn of Daly

As the 9th alternate at the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick, John Daly wasn’t even expected to see any action. But as the improbable unfolded, Daly took the last spot, drove the ball crazy long, and dissected the Pete Dye design. After his 3-shot victory, the Paul Bunyan of golf garnered a legion of fans that follow him to this day.

Lopez Arrives

Nancy Lopez, responsible for the rise and popularity of the LPGA, blazing the trail for the likes of Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa, had a rookie year for the ages. In 1978, as Lopez drained a 35-foot putt on the last hole at the Bankers Trust Classic, commenced her legacy by winning her fifth straight tournament as a rookie.

Elder Breaks the Barrier

For 41 years, the only non-white men to step onto the hallowed grounds of Augusta National were the ones used to carry a white man’s golf bag around the track. In 1975, that all changed when Lee Elder qualified for the Masters and broke golf’s color barrier for good.

What An Idiot

Truer words were never spoken and Jean Van de Velde wouldn’t disagree. Needing just a double bogey on the last hole at Carnoustie to capture the 1999 Open Championship, Van de Velde had the trophy engraver starting early on his task. However, in what can only be categorized as a brain fart, Van de Velde spurned common sense and tried his luck over the Barry Burn. After dumping his ball into the water hazard twice, Van de Velde carded a triple bogey and never recovered as Paul Lawrie took the title in a three-man playoff.

The Heart of a Champion

In 1949, Ben Hogan, the best golfer in the world at the time, was in a serious car accident that almost took his life. Just five months later, Hogan limped his way through the U.S. Open which, by the way, he won.

Definitely a Player

Gary Player is perhaps one of the most underrated golfers ever. During the final round of the 1978 Masters, Player, at the age of 42, birdied seven of his last ten holes to post an unbelievable 30 on the back 9, a final round 64 and his third green jacket.

Tiger Dominates

The 2000 U.S. Open began with a tribute to the late Payne Steward and ended with the golfing world collectively shaking their heads. Mauling the entire field, Tiger Woods finished at 12-under par, winning by a record 15 strokes and prompted Ernie Els to state, “It’s kind of embarrassing to finish 15 shots behind. We’re not in the same ballpark right now.”

‘Duel in the Sun’

What could be better than Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus squaring off for the 1977 Open Championship at Turnberry? The two icons exchanged blow after blow, Watson draining a 60-foot miracle putt to tie the lead and Nicklaus answering with a 35-footer of his own. In the end, Watson’s final two rounds of 65-65 beat Nicklaus by a single stroke. Said runner-up Hubert Green, who finished 11 shots behind, “I won the Open Championship. These guys were playing in another tournament.”

Ryding a Wave

The Ryder Cup is notorious for providing golf with some of its greatest moments. None more so than in 2006 when European team member, Darren Clarke, still reeling from the death of his wife six weeks prior, won all three of his matches and provided the emotional an emotional edge leading the drubbing of the U.S. team.

‘Shot heard round the world’

Gene Sarazen is anything but a one-hit wonder. However, in 1935, trailing by three shots at the Masters, Sarazen hit perhaps the most unbelievable shot ever. Brandishing a 4-wood, Sarazen clobbered it 235-yards, right into the hole, for an albatross on the par-5 15th. Sarazen won the tournament in a playoff.

The Jones Slam

After winning the U.S. Amateur Open, the British Amateur Open, the British Open, and the U.S. Open in 1930, Bobby Jones became the first, and only, golfer to have won all four majors in a single calendar year.

Tiger Breaks the Ice

In 1997, Tiger Woods became the youngest Masters’ champion at the age of 21. He won the tournament by 12 shots, posting an 18-under par score. Not bad for a kid who needed his I.D. to enjoy a celebratory beer.

And That Makes Six

Jack Nicklaus is arguably the best golfer of all time. This title may have been cemented in 1986 when Nicklaus, all 46 years of him, posted a back 9 score of 30 at the Masters to claim his 6th green Jacket. Overcoming a 4-shot deficit, Nicklaus won by a single stroke.

Jack’s Defining Moment

As I argued in the last paragraph, Nicklaus may or may not be the best golfer ever. However, there is no doubting that Nicklaus embodies everything that golf represents in terms of sportsmanship and camaraderie. In the final match of the 1969 Ryder Cup, Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin squared off to decide the fate of each team. On the final hole, Nicklaus nailed his 4-foot putt, picked up his ball and astonishingly picked up Jacklin’s ball marker, only two feet from the hole, conceding Jacklin’s putt and halving the tournament for its only time in history. Ask about it later, Jacklin remarked that it was the greatest gesture of sportsmanship that he had ever seen and that he would remember it for the rest of his life. That is what golf is all about.

The Story of St Andrews – The Oldest Golf Course in the World

By James Man

The Old Course at St. Andrews Links is said to be the oldest golf course in the world. The Old Course itself has a great deal of history to it and no one knows for sure when golf was first played on these grounds. There is a great deal of conflicting evidence regarding this, however it is clear that golfers have played on this course for over 600 years, with the exception of a 45 year period when golf was banned from 1457 to 1502.

The Old Course is located in Fife, Scotland and is one of seven golf courses on the Links. The Links itself is the largest European public golf complex; each course in the complex provides its own set of challenges.

There are many special rules and traditions with The Old Course including the fact that on Sundays the course is closed in order to give the grass time to rest. On this day the course is opened up to the people of Fife to use as a park. The only exceptions to the Sunday rule are when the Open Championships, Dunhill Links Championships, Ricoh Womens Championships, or St Andrews Links Trophy and the St Rule Trophy are being played.

The Old Course is highly regarded by professional and every day golfers worldwide and it has held the Open Championships more times than any other golf course in the world. In total the Open Championships have been held on this course 27 times and it is set to hold them again in 2010. This was the course that Tiger Woods won his very first Open Championship.

The Old Course is one that serious golfers from around the world dream they will one day have the opportunity to play on. As it has many unique features that will only be found at this specific location including its distinctive double greens and the fact that it can be played in two different directions. In general the course is played anti clockwise with the exception of three days during the first week in April.

The fact that the Old Course at St. Andrews is still a public course may be why it attracts so many visitors to it each year. Along with the fact that so many professional golfers consider this particular course to be one of the hardest yet best courses they have ever played on. In fact when Tiger Woods won his very first Open Championship at The Old Course he claimed that the course was his favourite.

In addition to its famous playing grounds, on the property lays the R&A Club house, a historic castle like building whose members are responsible for governing and organizing the Open Championships. It is often assumed that this club owns the Old Course however in reality there are many different clubs that have the privilege to play on this course, and it is open to the general public as well.

With its deep rooted traditions, panoramic views, and outstanding ratings The Old Course at St. Andrews is truly a unique and unforgettable piece of golf history.

All Golfers Strive to Be Better Than the Rest

By Arnold Baker

Have you ever wondered how many people have teed off from the first tee in the entire history of the game of golf? To tell you the truth, until I just wrote that, I never really pondered that fact. It’s got to be a pretty extravagant number, wouldn’t you think? Not only that, think of how many people out of all those are really wretched golfers. What is even more incredible is when you think about how many of those golfers are actually accomplished, which is not that many. With that being said, it is truly remarkable how the following golfers rose up above the best of the best and became legends of golf.

Arnold Palmer

“The King,” as he is called, is one of golf’s many pioneers; being golf’s first popular personality from the onset of its television era and setting the stage for the colossal popularity it sees on television today. Palmer started to swing clubs in an effective manner at a young age. At the age of seven, he broke 70 for the first time. After briefly attending Wake Forest University on a golf scholarship, Palmer enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. While in the Coast Guard, he still found time to hone his golf game. The extra practice paid off; Palmer went on to win his first major championship at the 1959 Masters. This victory sealed his position among the top tier of professional golfers at the time.

Before Palmer came around, very few Americans participated in The Open Championship, due to the small purse, the irregular style of the links courses, and the extensive traveling to the United Kingdom. Palmer threw all the excuses out the window and won back-to-back Open Championships in the early 60s, thus convincing many other American professionals to partake in The Open, as well. In 1967, he became the first PGA professional to obtain one million dollars in career earnings. In 2006, his magnificent career came to end when he withdrew from his very last tournament, disgruntled with his poor play. Thanks to his infallible personality and business ventures, Palmer single-handedly brought golf to the common man. His immense popularity among the masses spawned the creation of “Arnie’s Army,” the name of his dedicated following. Five key attributes led to Palmer’s marketability: his good looks, his modest background, the way he played golf, his involvement in exciting finishes, and his pleasantness.

Annika Sorenstam

Annika Sorenstam, known simply as “Annika,” is not only considered to be one of the greatest women’s golfers of all time, but one of the greatest golfers of all time, period. Born in Bro, Sweden, Annika excelled at tennis, skiing, and soccer as a young girl. It wasn’t until the age of 12 that she discovered her true calling- swinging clubs at a ball and getting paid a lot of money to do it. 1995 proved to be her breakout year, winning her first LPGA Tour title at the U.S. Women’s Open and finishing at the top of the money list. On her way to winning the 1998 Player of the Year award and money title, Annika became the first player in LPGA history to finish a season with a sub-70 scoring average, obtaining a 69.99 average. In 2004, she would one-up herself by obtaining a 68.69 average. She made history in 2003 by becoming the first female to play in a PGA Tour event since 1945. Her participation had mixed opinions from her male counterparts, as she failed to make the cut. Her many accomplishments earned her a pot in the Hall of Fame, a first for an international player under LPGA criteria. Some of her Hall of Fame credentials include being the only female golfer to shoot a 59 in competition, being the first LPGA player to win a major championship three consecutive years, and winning 72 LPGA tournaments, including 10 major championships and 18 international tournaments. Her 90 wins give her the most of all time for a female golfer. In May of 2008, Annika announced her retirement from the game, effective at the end of the 2008 season.

Jack Nicklaus

The Golden Bear is considered by many to be the greatest golfer of all time. Together with Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, they were considered the “Big Three,” and together they captured the imagination of golf fans everywhere, sparking a much elevated interest in the game of golf. This interest has carried over to present time. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Nicklaus attended Ohio State University, where he won the U.S. Amateur Championship twice in 1959 and 1961 and won the NCAA Championship in ’61, as well. As an amateur, Nicklaus entered the 1960 U.S. Open and shot a 282, only two shots behind Arnold Palmer, and obtained an amateur record that still stands to this day. In 1962, his first year as a professional, Nicklaus went on to defeat Palmer at the U.S. Open in a playoff, securing his first professional victory and Rookie of the Year honors later on in the year. Nicklaus started his Masters dominance in 1963 by winning his first Green Jacket. Months later, he added his first PGA Championship to the mix. He didn’t stop there, winning back-to-back Masters in 1965 and 1966. 1966 proved to be a stellar year for Nicklaus, as we won his first Open Championship, thus becoming the youngest player ever at the age of 26 to win the Career Slam. If winning one Career Slam wasn’t enough, Nicklaus went on to win a second one in 1971. A year after winning the PGA Championship in 1973 and capturing his 14th and record-breaking major championship, Nicklaus was among the original 13 inductees enshrined into the World Golf Hall of Fame. His Hall of Fame career didn’t end there. In 1978, Nicklaus won The Open Championship, and with that, he obtained his third Career Slam. Some years later, Nicklaus turned many heads by winning the Masters at the age of 46, making him the oldest Green Jacket winner in the storied history of the Masters. After enjoying some years of success on the Champions Tour and a steady drop off in his playing performance, the Golden Bear called it a career at the 2005 Open Championship. He ended his career with 18 majors, the most in the history of golf. Throughout his playing career, Nicklaus was known for his conservative playing style, which lead to his banner course management skills. He is also widely known as one of the greatest putters of all time and for being one of the longest ball strikers in his prime. He has made a second career out of course design and writing golf instruction books. With the help of his sons, he has designed over 200 golf courses around the world, including the golf course where his very own Memorial Tournament is held annually.

The 2010 competitions as part of the British Open Championship would be conducted in the month of July at St. Andrews. Players will be selected based on several criteria. Players in the top fifty lists of golfers on the world golf rankings would be given priority. The players who were featured in the list of top thirty players in the last PGA Tour season Money List and the European Tour Race Dubai would be given precedence. A large number of these players would also be in the list of top fifty golfers. Previous champions of the Open championship below sixty years of age are also on the list of exemptions.

Top ten players according to the Open Championship performances in the previous years would also be selected. Winners of major championships would also be in the list of exemption categories. The other methods to find a place in the championship are local qualifying and international qualifying. Tiger Woods is one of the players of the 2010 British Golf Open Championship. Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson would be participating in the competitions. They will be trying hard to find their initial claret jug. Golfers like Pardaig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods are the occupants of the list of British Open top players.

Analyzing the previous performances of some of the top golfers would help you to get an idea of their capability to enter the final round. In 2009, the winner was Stewart Click. He showed a highly impressive performance. Tiger Woods is a golfer who features in the list of multiple winners of the British Open. Tiger woods won in the following years: 2006, 2005 and 2000. The 2008 competitions saw the emergence of Pardaig Harrington as the winner. Players like Todd Hamilton, Ben Curtis, Paul Lawrie, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman etc are also there on the list of golfers with impressive performances in the British Open Golf Championship.

The event would be of much importance to those with interest in Golf Betting. Discussions are already on regarding betting of the 2010 British Open Golf Championship. There have been some developments in the golf betting scene associated with the British Open. Let us have a look at what happened in the betting scene when Pardaig Harrington became the winner of the championship. A large number of Irishmen were able to gain huge profits when he became the winner.

He was suffering from an injury prior to the championship and his odds were at 33/1 in the golf odds associated with the British Open. However, smart golfing backer took Harrington odds and increased it by taking the odds of Harrington winning British Open continuously for the second time along with the winner odds nationality. This is something that backers can follow this year also since this method worked in the year 2008 and the backers could win huge amounts of money. Before betting on a player, analyzing his past performances, especially in the tournament would be helpful.

Last year, the championship was won by Stewart Click; he was able to find victory against some of the top players of golf. He is well-versed with the format with which the games in the championship are played. If he maintains his previous form in the golf competition this year also, the chances of him becoming the winner of the completion are high. Try to analyze how some of the top rated golfers have performed in the last few years under different conditions and how they fared against the popular players of golf in the recent tournaments.

British Open History – Can Padraig Harrington Win His 3rd Straight Open Championship?

By Marco Stassi

It has been over 50 years since Peter Thomson won 3 consecutive British Opens. He won in 1954, 1955, and 1956. At the 2009 British Open to be played at Turnberry from July 16 – 19 Padraig Harrington will attempt to duplicate the 3-peat of Peter Thomson. Harrington has won 3 of the last 8 Major golf championships, the 2007 & 2008 British Opens along with the 2008 PGA Championship. So he is very capable of winning at the highest levels. A third consecutive British Open victory would be a monumental accomplishment.

In 2008 Padraig Harrington won his second consecutive Open Championship at Royal Birkdale by four strokes over runner up Ian Poulter. He was the first European player to successfully defend his Open title since James Braid in 1906.

Harrington was locked into a close duel with Greg Norman for the first 12 holes. After three consecutive bogeys starting at the par 3 seventh, Harrington went from to two up to one down. But the Irishman made a clutch 5-foot putt to save par and get back into a tie for the lead at the par 4 10th. When Harrington stepped to the tee on 13 here had been just one birdie at the 499-yard, par 4 hole. He conservatively hit a 3 iron into the middle of the fairway. This left him with 210 yards to the front of the green. Harrington hit a shot to fifteen feet and rolled it in for birdie to take the lead.

Harrington would 2 putt fro birdie on hole number 15 and for the second time in four days, he made eagle at the 17th and you could hear the roars all the way from Dublin. This gave him an insurmountable four-stroke lead.

Padraig won the 2007 Open, his first major championship, in a playoff with Sergio Garcia. Standing on the 18th tee with a one stroke lead, Harrington’s drive found the famous burn that runs throughout Carnoustie. His third shot would find the burn again and brought back memories of Jean Van de Velde’s meltdown at the 1999 British Open. But from 40 yards away, Harrington ran his pitch shot to four feet. He sank the left to right breaking putt and escaped with a double bogey.

Garcia needing a par to win couldn’t get the job done as he finished with a bogey 5. Harrington would birdie the first playoff hole while Garcia bogeyed for a 2 shot lead that would hold up over the 4 hole playoff.
